Depressed and sad are not the same

Having suffered from bipolar disorder most of my life, usually depressed, nothing irks me more than someone saying they are depressed when they are sad.

Pet died, family member sick, boyfriend/girlfriend left you; you’re sad, not depressed. While I can sympathize, it doesn’t even compare.

Depression engulfs your entire being. You see no hope, no light, no future. You feel an indescribable sadness with no cause therefore no cure. The only thing worse than the sadness is the numbing feeling of nothing.

I appreciate the gesture when someone says, “I know how you feel,” followed by a sad story. Unfortunately, unless you’ve battled true depression you can’t imagine how I feel.

I just wish people would stop confusing the two.

Remember to smile,

  1. I was diagnosed with bipolar one at 24, but had already been battling ocd since 12. Lately , my bipolar has flared up for the past two weeks and it has been difficult to say the least. It might be due to this ADD med. I get it is what I am trying to say, maybe not your bipolar journey but I get it.
