I’ve known I was bipolar since age 17. Saw my first doctor at 21. I’m now 27, still not in control of my illness. In that time I have read more about bipolar than anyone should ever have to. Yet, all doctors treat me like a child and speak with a condescending tone. As if 10 years wasn’t enough time for me to have learned a thing or two. I think many people, myself included, deserve more respect when it comes to doctors. After all, we are people with brains and feelings.

I know you feel, I have to fight so hard to get them to listen me. They must just not have an idea of what it’s really like? One psychiatrist seemed to insinuate that I was making the bipolar part up because I knew so much about it.

My most recent psychiatrist is surprisingly respectful. It might be because during our first visit I brought her a list of my symptoms and possible diagnosis.

That’s great, I’ve an appointment to see someone in May who I hope will be better!

I son’t know if it will help, but here’s something I wrote more or less on the subject: https://bipolarjan.wordpress.com/2014/03/27/the-hired-help/
